As SEE SALT has grown we have been asked more and more about the health benefits of our salt vs. other salts. We have also noticed a barrier with some people where they simply think they shouldn’t use salt because it’s ‘bad for you’. This is absolutely not the case. Although everything should be consumed in moderation, we can eat clean AND eat flavorful.

What is fleur de sel?

Fleur de sel is a french term meaning flower of salt. SEE SALTS fleur de sel naturally derived from the the ocean. The salt is harvested from the oceans marsh and is processed only by the wind and sun. The fleur de sel is the very top layer of the salt marsh making it most premium and delicate in flavor and texture. SEE SALT’s fleur de sel is a finishing salt that is hand harvested off the coast of Ile de Re, France.

What makes different sea salts better than other salt?

There are three main salt categories: table salt, regular sea salt / kosher salt and then finishing salt. Gram per gram table salt, sea salt & finishing salts have the same amount of sodium. However, per teaspoon sea salt and finishing salts typically contain less sodium. The main differences between any salt is the processing, texture, flavor and iodine content.

SEE SALT fleur de sel, a type of sea salt, is great used as a finishing salt to boost the flavor of a meal right before serving. Waiting to season your meal with sea salt right before serving (versus during the cooking process) is an excellent way to monitor sodium intake & use less overall. Larger crystals of sea salts & finishing salts may result in an individual consuming less overall as well.

Why not Morton's or generic table salt?

Generic table salt are mined from ground and then highly processed. Up to 80 minerals and essential trace minerals are removed. It contains added ingredients such as iodine & chemically engineered anti-caking agents called calcium silicate (refer to this article for further information) Calcium silicate

also creates the “sharp salty-ness” that typical table salt has.Table salts have typically been so heavily processed and heated up to 1200 degrees that all the healthy trace elements have been stripped leaving you with nothing but high sodium content and additives.

Are some salts bleached and processed?

Yes, typical table salts such as Morton’s has been heavily processed, bleached and heated. This high heat changes the chemical structure of sodium chloride, transforming it into a state that is no longer natural and different from what our bodies are designed to digest and use. An additive called calcium silicate is then added to prevent clumping. Imparting a “sharper” flavor than kosher or sea salt, the fine crystals are considered *saltier than kosher salt.

I use pink himalayan sea salt. Is this the same?

Pink Himalayan Salt comes from the Himalayan Mountains and has been quite the rage over the last few years. It is important to note that similarly to table salt it is mined from the ground. However, pink himalayan salt is better than table salts because many of minerals and elements have been retained through minimal processing.
SEE SALTs fleur de sel is harvested from a beautiful salt marsh formed from the ocean in the south of France. Because the two salts come from such different places on the globe, they will contain different minerals and trace elements, as well as having different flavor profiles and health benefits. This fleur de sel is harvested and processed naturally by the sun and wind making it superior to most other salts.

Should I eliminate adding salt to my food?

No, by adding flavor to your food such as your fresh veggies, you lower your desire to add sauces and other flavorings with additives that are not natural. The fleur de sel has minerals and antioxidants that are ACTUALLY healthy for you and crucial to the function of your body.

Is this good for my kids also?

Our fleur de sel is naturally harvested from the earth and contains many trace elements that are crucial to our bodies function. Adding a pinch of fleur de sel to your childrens food will accentuate natural flavors and help to eliminate as many processed foods where the true sodium issues typically occur.

What is the difference between sea salt and pure sodium?

Sea salt is not pure sodium. Infact, our fleur de sel actually contains less sodium than typical salts on the market. SEE SALT fleur de sel contains 92 – 96 % instead of 98% – 100% sodium content of most salts on the market.

What dietary minerals are in this fleur de sel?

This fleur de sel contains trace minerals such as magnesium, calcium, iodine, silica oxide, potassium & iron.

Why is it important for me to have these electrolytes and antioxidants?

Minerals are important for our body to function optimally. Electrolytes are also important for body functions such as muscle contractions and transmission of nerve impulses. Antioxidants may protect cells in the body against the effects & damage of free-radicals. Free-radicals are molecules that the body produces when it breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. Long term, free-radicals may have negative effects on our overall health and play a role in the development of a variety of diseases.

Does this salt have iodine?

Yes, iodine is one of the many dietary minerals found NATURALLY in our fleur de sel. Others include, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and silica oxide.

What is Silica Oxide?

Silica Oxide is a mineral known for its beautifying properties such as slowing down general aging of skin such as wrinkles, helps to thicken hairs luster and shine and prevents brittle nails. Silicon has many other health benefits such as strengthening connective tissues and bones. Silicon is one of the most important vital trace mineral required by the body for strong and flexible joints, glowing skins and stronger bones. It also helps with the absorption of vitamin D, glocosomine and calcium.
Silicon is the second most available element found in the earth’s crust. Since SEE SALT is harvested naturally from the earth the deposits of the silicon are found abundantly in our salt and maintained through its natural processing.

How can I lower my sodium intake and still have flavorful food?

It is important to realize that adding a pinch of sea salt to your food is not the culprit for high sodium levels, but rather the over consumption of refined foods. Sodium is important for the human body to transfer and move blood cells throughout the body. Pre packaged foods have been packed in pure sodium including soups, sauces, canned veggies and fruits. Using real food, and a pinch of true sea salt such as SEE SALT’s fleur de sel that contains necessary minerals for your body and less sodium than standard table salt is a win-win combination that promotes healthy dietary choices.
